Meet #AngelaYuen, a contemporary installation artist based in Hong Kong. Her work resonates with a distinct local sentiment, employing nostalgic found objects to create three-dimensional sculptures. Utilising light projection techniques, she casts vibrant, silhouette-like narratives of Hong Kong.
In her latest solo exhibition ‘Mirage’ at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, Yuen continues her signature creative approach, specially crafting two new installation pieces for the venue. Observing Hong Kong's urban culture through a uniquely emotional lens, she collects nostalgic plastic toys, stationery, and locally distinctive found objects to create deeply narrative works. Combined with light projection techniques, these pieces evoke collective memories and prompt profound reflection on the city's transformation.
Interestingly, during this interview, the artist revealed several unique insights conveyed through her installations. These include her fond nostalgia for the human warmth of Hong Kong's industrial era, the personal stories and memories of citizens embedded within her works, and her perspectives on the city's development.
