Seattle-based Japanese glass artist #ErikoKobayashi infuses a sense of playfulness into her technically intricate creations. Crafted entirely from glass, her hyper-realistic pieces delve into our relationship with meal times, comfort foods, and the nostalgia of iconic brands.
Using the hot casting technique, she fuses individual pieces at high temperatures in handmade molds. In creating glass sculptures, inaccurate fusion temperatures caused excessive melting of the components, errors in mold shape led to temperature inconsistencies, and miscalculations of annealing time resulted in glass cracks. Through experimentation, she developed her own tool and techniques and fine-tuned the temperature control to achieve the desired shapes.
Kobayashi also found inspiration at the renowned #GumWall in #PikePlaceMarket in Seattle, which stirred her senses with a myriad of scents and sights. She finds delight in the multitude of visitors who leave their mark on the wall, enabling her to visualize the unseen and share in the collective experiences of those who have passed through. Kobayashi even created a bronze cast of a mouth to imprint teeth marks onto her glass gum.
Kobayashi utilizes forms we encounter in our everyday lives to engage her viewer with the familiar, but also to challenge them to question and rethink these objects.
