Emerging Hong Kong artist Peep invites introspective souls alike to step inside a familiar yet often overlooked terrain of home in her debut solo exhibition, Tears and Cheers. This profoundly personal showcase is a visual diary that captures the essence of Peep's creative evolution from childhood reveries to adult reflections. Through a collection of evocative works in various mediums, Peep encourages viewers to embrace the full spectrum of human emotions and find beauty in the mundane moments that shape our existence. Standing true to the artist's belief that life, in all its complexity, unfolds at its own pace and holds its own answers.

The Illuminated Past

At the heart of the exhibition hangs a hand-painted paper lamp, a centrepiece that serves as a bridge between past and present. This luminous creation reimagines a cherished childhood memory when Peep transformed her bedroom ceiling lamp into a personal art piece, carving out a space uniquely her own. Years later, a new lamp illuminates the main hall, casting a warm glow over the exhibition and inviting visitors to reconnect with their childhood creativity.

Vessels of Emotion: Tears Container Series

Another standout series, Tears Container, offers a powerful metaphor for emotional processing. The collection features a series of delicately painted ceramic cups, each one a vessel for different emotional states. Adorned with whimsical cats and animals, these containers encourage viewers to compartmentalise and honour their feelings, transforming internal struggles into tangible, even beautiful, objects of contemplation.

Living Room Chronicles

This exhibition is deeply rooted in the concept of home as a sanctuary, a theme that resonates strongly in today's world. Peep's unique style blends elements of realism with a touch of whimsy, resulting in scenes that are at once familiar and dreamlike. Tears and Cheers serve as a gentle reminder that amidst the chaos of the outside world, our homes remain steadfast as arenas for personal discovery, emotional processing, and ultimately, self-acceptance.

About Peep (Hong Kong | B.1991)

Peep is a Hong Kong artist who draws influence from her personal experience and reflects the world seen through her lens as a contemporary woman. The delicate and vibrant paintings of women reveal an unfettered utopia of female leisure and joy, at times featuring animals representing the feelings and stories of people from different walks of life. Her works are often infused with a dash of cuteness in hopes of bringing joy and positive energy to the chaos in this world.

Following a minimal composition, Peep utilises smooth black outlines and muted primary colours to depict her popular female character with rounded features. Her play with flowing lines revitalises the simplistic scenes and delineates women’s unique vigour and vitality. Peep’s flat yet playful style visualises her yearning for ease and unsophistication in modern life. The artist hopes her paintings will spark a sense of joy and whimsy in the viewer, inviting them to take a step back and see the world in a more lighthearted and imaginative way.

After graduating from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2015, she enjoyed a fruitful career as the Art Director in an advertising agency whilst pursuing a career as a visual artist on Instagram. Since then, she has collaborated with well-known brands such as Casetify, and her works can be seen across the urban and media landscape, such as K11 Musea in Hong Kong, Vogue Hong Kong, Elle Hong Kong and M+ Museum Shop.
