Renowned for their large-scale environmental installations, Christo and Jeanne-Claude completed “L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped” in 2021.In 1961, three years after they met in Paris, the artistic duo began creating works of art in public spaces. Christo, drawn to the Arc de Triomphe since his arrival in Paris, visualized the wrapped monument in a photomontage in 1962 and a collage in 1988.
Six decades later, the vision was concretized in 2021.Per Christo's wishes, the work was completed in 2021 by his team a year after his death. The iconic monument was enveloped in 25,000 square meters of silvery-blue fabric and 3,000 meters of red rope.Throughout the installation, display, and removal of their artwork, the Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Arc de Triomphe stayed lit. Veterans’ associations and dedicated volunteers ensured the flame’s continuity, honoring the Unknown Soldier and fallen soldiers who fought for France. The wrapping lasted 16 days, following which the materials underwent the final stages of repurposing before being returned to the city of Paris.
